Are you guys tired of my endless barrage of V-Day crafts yet? Well too damn bad, because now it is time for my piece de resistance! It took approximately 6 hours to make, and was sent to my dear parents.

This was my first successful stencil prototype for tracing the glasses onto the card

Clearly, I needed a drink to reward myself for making such a fantastic stencil.

You see, that's actually vodka in that jam jar. No it's not. Yes it is.

Either way, this happened ↓ Make of it what you will.

I've been seeing all sorts of watercolor happenings on the 'net these days (here and here),

and I have to say they piqued my interest.

And when I found out exactly how little painting skill it actually takes to make incredible looking ombré blobs, I was sold!

This card not only works on Valentine's Day, but would be appropriate for most big event type life situations, like getting married or having a bebe. This is what I like to call versatility.

I also bought myself a little customized stamp for my cards so I can fend off pesky imposters. While the public isn't exactly clamoring for "handmade by Kathryn" originals at this very moment, I'm fairly certain the problem is imminent.

You say deluded dreams, I say foresight!

PS: In the interest of full disclosure of my candy interests, I bought the foul-tasting conversation hearts (pictured above) just to enhance the general aesthetic value of the post. This is what I like to call dedication to the reader. You're welcome!

What's better than a homemade musical smorgasbord to communicate your love?

They're very easy to make and customize with Design Mom's printable template, not to mention, it's a very good frugal gift. Honestly though, I think they're giving c.d.'s out for free these days.

Song-wise I went soft and acoustic with "You and Me" by Penny & the Quarters, Jose Gonzalez's version of "Heartbeats" and a few other tunes. But you could do a funny mix or an ironic mix, or really anything. This is your chance to express yourself! Okay I'm going to go eat all those swedish fish now. They have served their purpose.

It's about a week and a half until Valentine's Day, which means my craft box and I have been gearing up to make cards for about a month now.

For my lady friends, I started by making Honestly WTF's beaded bracelet. I braided and beaded all of these things with my bare hands! I swear, no gloves! Don't they look pretty professional, like you could buy them at Urban Outfitters for maybe $10?

Excuse me if I seem quite pleased with myself, but I am, so.

Then I threaded the bracelets through my adapted version of Dandee Design's Valentine's card.

Ta-da!

Furry balls of love make the best present toppers.

Making them with my new Clover Pom Pom Maker is actually a lot of fun. One generous reviewer of this particular pom pom machine mentioned TWICE how the Clover was singlehandedly responsible for letting her fall, "back in love with pom-poms."

So go ahead... rekindle the romance. Unborn pom poms are waiting for you!

It's common knowledge that Alexa Chung is the poster child of palm trees. And like most bloggers, I am quite smitten with the girl. Remember when she pandered to my cute little wrists? I really had no choice about my feelings for her.

So naturally, when I saw a pair of velvet loafers on eBay emblazoned with her state shrub, I couldn't resist.

Whenever I wear them I feel quite like a lady of leisure.

Honey, I'm home!

It's 2012 and I'm wearing a very out-of-my-comfort-box skirt. Thank you, rash decision to go on a Black Friday rampage!

Don't the cut-out dots and blinding color reminded you of a Roy Lichtenstein piece?

If you need a little refresher, he's that artist who did those graphic comic-book pop art pieces where the desperate girl is on the phone letting the waterworks fly and saying something like, "Oh Brad, I thought you'd never call."

And guess what? I was also one of those Lichtenstein girls for Halloween! This was a risky move on my part, as my red dot face paint sort of made me look like I either

a) had a contagious disease

b)really needed some Proactiv

Not exactly as appealing as your average Katy Perry costume. But I had to assume the risk when I randomly found this skirt a week before Halloween at a vintage store. Can you see the print? It's a mash-up of all these pop art pictures, including an actual Lichtenstein! I kid you not, this beyond perfect skirt just fell into my hands, and for 16 clams no less.

Was it DIVINE INTERVENTION? DESTINY? Yes and yes.

That's when I knew, rampant acne makeup or not, I had to commit to this costume. The phone and the thought bubble head gear really completed the ensemb. It was a Halloween hit!

Any way, back to this stone-faced Indian guy.

LE CUCUMBER

About a month ago I was lucky enough to work as a model dresser at a Lanvin fashion show for the"Lanvin Loves L.A." event!

The day before, I had a fitting with my model, Elsa, and Alber Elbaz. Now lets be clear here, I was not giving any input. There was no "Oh yeah Alber, I think this clutch would be insane with that dress." I was more like wordlessly obeying orders in a wide-eyed trance while trying to feel up the clothes that had just come from the Paris runway. BUT STILL to be mere feet away from the man who designed these lovely shoes? My life had peaked!

I knew this because it went drastically down hill the day of the event when I found out I was the SINGLE DRESSER WITH THE MOST LOOKS in the show. Yours truly was the only girl who had to slide their model in and out of three outfits in the span of a couple minutes.

Other ~~slackers~~ people had one measly outfit.

how did this happen to me?

Maybe it was because of my self-assured manner and can-do attitude. Maybe it was because when they asked me if I had done dressing before, I looked them in the eye and confidently lied, "YES!"

When I arrived at the event, a board was hanging from my rack with tons of notes on how to recreate the looks just like Alber wanted them.

As you can see from this complicated diagram, things were coming together nicely for me to embark on a full-fledged panic attack.

Models were everywhere just shooting the breeze, while I was furiously trying to get my brain to memorize the specific jewelry placement of look #2.

Thankfully, Elsa was an old pro and I was able to get her in all three looks in the nick of time. I should have known that girl was good–she closed the show.

As the French would say I was as cool as le cucumber, and I successfully avoided ruining the fashion show. Win!

It started with this necklace given to me by my thrift-extraordinare mom. It's from this 50's era designer named Renoir of California who made amazing geometric brass jewelry as part of the arts and crafts movement. I'll say it once more. ARTS & CRAFTS MOVEMENT. Clearly I'm into this. So of course I ebayed that shiz and won the bronze cuff you've been admiring this entire time.

and this is all really relevant because there is bomb vintage jewelry to be had in Palm Springs, especially at this place called Dazzles! See what I'm doing here? Making connections and weaving my words guys just weaving my words.

Heather is one of those people whose advice you take. When she goes to The Parker Palm Springs, you follow like a cute little lemming.

The picture below refused to enlarge, but we accept it for who it is.

Boys bedecked in pink and white suits are waiting for your arrival. They didn't even get poncey with me despite the fact that I was wearing rainboots, cutoff shorts and the most rumpled silk shirt ever.

The bang up thing about this place is it's like a maze with all these hidden activities around every corner. And you know how I love ACTIVITIES! First a little croquet..

A SPIRIT ANIMAL TO CALL MY OWN

In my hometown, a lot of ~~people~~ hippies toss around phrases like "spirit animal" and "power piece" like it ain't no thing. So when I saw this mystical Aztec winged creature while I was shopping at Wasteland with my friend Linda, my first thought was I have found my spirit animal! I was raised among these people, please don't judge me.

But less about quizzes and more about me. How appropriate is it that I came into commune with my sacred critter in the form of a badass tunic? (Very appropriate! Because I love shopping? You with me here?) So for a mere 20 clams the bird was mine. I also got a lovely vintage Saks blouse, but that is a (less interesting) tale for another time.

I took my purchases home and thought about where the appropriate venue would be to let my Spirit Vulture loose. I knew it would be a mistake to wear this back home in Mt. Shasta, for fear of attracting attention from a certain ilk of crystal-carrying folk. I did, however, have a lapse of judgement and wear the tunic (actually this exact outfit) to work. This also turned out to be a mistake. Apparently I need to reevaluate my concept of "office-appropriate" clothing. That is what my boss said to me anyway.

Remember when I gave these folks a crafty engagement gift? I had clearly set the bar high for

1) personalization

2) cuteness

so when their wedding rolled around, I had to get creative. Lets just say, I was not hitting up the registry at Bloomingdales. We ended up getting the lovely couple His and Her's monogrammed passports for their honeymoon to Tahiti! With her newly married initials! and well his initials stay the same, but still cute!

and then I had to keep the gift wrapping on par, so I transformed a plain orange box with a bit of tropical bird printed fabric (totally on-theme. Remember Tahiti?!)

PS: If you didn't already notice, I like to stick my fancy scissors in any craft post whether it's relevant or not. They are made by this woman named Parveen in India, whose family has been making scissors forever and they are made of hand-forged carbonized steel with brass handles . My boyfriend got them for me as a gift. He is clearly on board with my future craft room.

Yahoo the video of the Teen Vogue shoot I worked on as an assistant stylist is up. Remember the last shoot where my title was second assistant stylist? Yep, this is what I call PERSONAL PROGRESS.

If you pause at a minute or so in, you can see my humps make their acting debut. This is all the casual Teen Vogue video watcher will ever know of me. Am I proud of it? No.

However, I was not merely showing off for the camera, but also desperately trying to strap these beasts onto Selena's feet...

a few shoepads later (the things were literally enormous - I could club someone with them) I managed to get the bootie/espadrille/tennis shoe hybrid on, and all was well in Teen Land.

I go to work at an actual office two days a week now. One of the days I go in is BAGEL DAY!

When I am not in the kitchen eating free bagels, I sit in a cubicle, which is currently decorated with a picture of Kobe Bryant and a dreamcatcher. While these are bold decor choices, I think it could use a little more to get the melon going. Here are my administration-approved desk toys.

Folks, this is Vasquez Rocks. If you're from LA you may skip ahead, but otherwise this place is pretty neat and maybe you should go. It's kind of otherwordly, like prehistoric meets Mars, which explains why they film practically everything involving outerspace here.

Also of note is the Chick-fil-A only about 20 minutes away. I dragged Zac there so I could relive my Georgia childhood memories of chicken nuggets with a side of Jesus juice. Everything was as excellent as I remembered, except the Christian Rock blaring in the bathroom. For this we can forgive them.

This lace-trimmed maxi is one part traditional Mexican wedding dress and one part Dolce & Gabbana spring collection. Match made in heaven if you ask me.

My boyfriend surprised me with this Clare Vivier clutch in my favorite color combination. It is locally-made AND eco-friendly. Whadya think of THAT Mother Earth?

BUT HEY, I call it like I see it.

I will take this opportunity to casually brag that my skirt and bag both have vintage coin buttons on them. American 5¢ Buffalo coins down the skirt and a Français Republique coin on the purse. Now watcha think of me?

Little known fact: sometime around the first grade, I declared my ideal future occupation to be a COW GIRL. This heavy suede skirt with the buffalo buttons plus the silver+turquoise jewelry kind of brings me back to that 6 year old self.

If you follow my tweetz, you know I recently got these canvas shoes at Forever 21. Much like that terrible F21 sweater I was COMPELLED to makeover, these were just crying for some attention.

So I got out my paints.

and went to work on a watercolor toe,

a striped wooden heel,

and an abstract floral bit on the back.

When I wear these out in public people look down at my feet and think: She's creative. And whoa, she is probably like an artist too. This is the effect I am after, anyway.

If you're not familiar with TenOverSix, their shop on Melrose is the kinda place that makes you giddy and reminds you of all the shopping you need to do RIGHT NOW. Besides their own killer label, they carry brands like Acne, Rachel Comey, Vena Cava.. you get the gist. It's also kind of like a museum of cool because they have carefully curated records, art and photography books, and curiosities for perusing. See the little collage below for a few of their offerings.

What I'm trying to say is that I was very anxious about modeling for such an institution I personally esteem. But I showed up and it turned out well... WHAT CAN I SAY, REALLY WELL!

The co-owners, Kristen Lee and Brady Cunningham, were awesome ladies to work with and somehow I figured out how to move my body (with a little guidance from genius photographer, Justin Coit) like a real SUPAMODEL. Aren't you proud of me?

Ebay really does make all my dreams come true. I'm anxiously waiting for my latest purchase in the mail: vintage hot coral high waisted bell bottoms. I put the color in for effect. I don't normally get pants from Ebay because the fit is so specific, but how could I not? They are MAN-REPELLENT personified. Even my fashion-y boyfriend who's not into the typically sexy girl attire was a little put off and suggested I take a "little break" from the site. Ahahahaha oopsy.

Hey guys. It's been a while huh? I'm back now though, so please stop crying.

Remember our good friend the exhibitionist? We had another run-in yesterday, and this time I got a better look.

Long hair flying, short skirt hiked, and butt cheeks exposed. I almost took out my phone to snap a picture, but I didn't think it would be wise to encourage her. I did some random googling when I got home to find out more. Turns out PEREZ HILTON are I are both fascinated by her feminine mystique. I got this beaded cashmere cardigan from Shareen Vintage a few weeks ago. Have you LA peeps ever been there? Is it hot that I just said peeps?

It's kind of this bonkers underground vintage source in the very scurry depths of LA's garment district. Compared to the westside, this place feels a bit like Satan's playground. However, the dresses are bomb and decently priced.

BUT I must caution you before you attempt to venture out there. Shareen Vintage IS at the end of the earth. How do you know you have arrived? You will likely feel a sense of impending doom or you can just look for the bodies at the end of the road.

I'm not kidding. This is where MANNEQUINS GO TO DIE.

Why don't people wear shoe clips anymore? I mean I don't want to have to hold your hand on this, but really. Shoe clips can:

After a very long unexplained disappearance, I'M BAAACK! Did you miss me?

In an attempt to redeem myself, I was interning this summer at the west coast office of Vogue. It kinda took over in my life.. in a good way. But now, I am a free agent (aka unemployed) and have loads of time to force my boyfriend take pictures of me. YES!

So now can we talk about the polka dot/poppy masterpiece that is my dress? Doesn't it look like it belongs to a woman from the early 60's who fills her time entertaining and throwing really important parties at her manse? Casual, you know. I bought it from this man at the Melrose Trading Post where I also got this equally wonderful dress.

In other news, I moved in to my new apartment! I think it will be a VERY INTERESTING place to live. Just last night I was cornered by one of my new-age hippie neighbors for an hour. He fed me and my roommate three kinds of exotic fruit (which were likely laced with psychedelic drugs) while he tried to get us to join his pyramid scheme. We also had an encounter in the local laundromat, but more about that later.

Okhayy I know this a touchy subject. There are generally two predictable non-answers:

a) "You should wear what you want to wear, who cares what anyone else says."

b) "I'm not defined by trends blah blah blah."

THIS IS NON-HELPFUL BULLSHIT. So to help solve the question, I spent about an hour creating the genius diagram below (in the Microsoft Paint no less, the poor girl's photoshop). Whenever you are wondering whether a trend is still wearable, just picture where it fits into this spectrum. Tada!

In honor of the summer solstice yesterday, I thought it would be.. you know SPOT ON to wear this breezy Lanston tank the lovely people from Marked Showroom sent over. I tried to wear it as a dress at first, but I was stopped on my way out the door by the Decency Police (aka: my roommates). They do work hard to quell my subconscious exhibitionist tendencies, and I must thank them for that.

ANYWAY, even though I had to put on some shorts in order to avoid offending the general public, at least the shirt's multiple side vents made for quite the nice temp controlled environment. I didn't even have to get out my infamous Squeeze Breeze, which is a plus in everyone's book. As my friend informed me, carrying around your own personal water misting fan is sooo passé.

I spotted a gang of velvet jesuses (jesui?) in primary colors. If this isn’t the height of kitsch then I don’t know what is.

My roundup included one swallow print blazer blouse (anyone see the faintest miu miu similarity?) one peter pan navy silk blouse and a coral scarf for… GET THIS…$30. I’m talking mere clams, people.

My lovely new roommate and I headed out this morning on a mission to find the vintage store Hidden Treasures tucked up in Topanga Canyon. First, my accomplice and I stopped at the coffee shop next door to fuel up for the vintage rampage that would soon follow. I noticed a few indicators that we had had entered the unofficial hippie haven of Los Angeles:

1) We met a little girl bedecked in tie-dye named Luna Magic ( I could not make this up)
2) There was a man in the corner scouring a copy of Journey of Souls
3) The barista was reading customers their horoscopes
4) Casual refs to yoga classes and crystals were dropped into the conversation

VERRRY INTERESTING. We then headed over to Hidden Treasures and were equally amazed by this casa of oddities. Seriously wonderful wackjob place. I think the pictures speak for themselves here. If you have the chance to go, it’s a fantastic mini retreat from reality.

When this dress turned out to be a dismal failure in person - I'm talking unusual bunching and overall dismal shape - I needed a graduation outfit PRONTO. I had to get CREATIVE people, so I tapped into my Crafter-Queen skills and added a bustle deal to the front of my well-loved tartan skirt. Basically I just sewed one giant ruche up the middle.

The result?

Excess fabric accumulating around my hips and some sexay little leg peep. All in all, a modestly successful DIY.

In case you're super curious as to what I've been up to for the past 14 hours: I've been literally tied to my desk chair all night finishing my research project on fashion blogging, all the while nourishing my brain with pizza Combos. Last night my bf and I went to the Refinery 29 Los Angeles Launch Party at Space 15 Twenty. We got a sneak peak of their tag sale and got to mingle with fashionable peeps of the online persuasion (Is it still ok to say peeps?) I didn't get any snaps of my outfit, but I wore my orange lipstick, a crop top, and this bohemian fur-trim trench I won from eBay. Please use your imagination.

Sweet jesus, there was Jenni Kayne, Rag & Bone, Band of Outsiders, and Vena Cava to be had.

At the height of my sneaky behavior, I reached around the back of this mystery girl to snap a pic of her TexturedMessySexy situation.

The Like played a set - I was very pleased with the lead singer's Virgin Suicides vibe.

The story I'm about to tell you is an accurate telling of a recent factual event. There I was driving down Santa Monica Boulevard and up ahead I notice a very husky woman on a bike wearing only a bra and some micro gym shorts twisted up into her underpants. Okaaayy kind of suspect. But whatevs I'm an open minded girl. Then I start to pass her and notice that the cups of her bra are cut out and her winnebagos are literally flapping in the wind... SERIOUSLY FLAPPING. I almost drove into the median trying to make my brain understand the situation unfolding mere feet away from my vehicle. I could not make this up. Clearly Los Angeles is a safehaven for sexual deviants. Dios mio, I live in a modern den of iniquity!

PS: Anyone have suggestions for some good wooden footwear? Unfortunately I'd be the prime suspect if these platforms happened to go permanently missing from my roommate's closet.

You can't see it, but this dress is one of those full length cotton ensembles that is supremely comfortable. Due to my 5'4'' height, full length dresses don't exactly read Aphrodite ultra-femme on me. Yeah it's a little more like lady in a muu-muu. So when I wear this little number I have to throw my reservations that I am a walking frump-ette to the wind. I should just get those clunky Campbell booties I wear in almost every picture permanently attached to my feet. Problem-solver I am.
